Hu.3  Sognefjellshytta lodge to Fannaråken cabin
5 hours / 15km
700m
Marked in summer with cairns just to the edge of the glacier.

Leave Sognefjellshytta lodge and head south along Hu.2 for 1½km until a fork. Take the south west branch and round the eastern edge of Prestesteinvatnet lake. Follow the obvious path for 2km along its southern edge and then veer south along the path for a further 1km to the edge of the glacier.

To proceed from here crampons, an ice axe, rope and glacial experience are necessary. Without all these it will be necessary to ask about guided trips/equipment hire from Sognefjellshytta lodge.

There are daily guided trips in July and August. The route up the glacier is steep at the start then slackens off. Beware of deep surface streams and moulins (wells) in this area. Set a course for the steep eastern slopes and gain an icy ridge.

Cross to the south side of the ice ridge and head up across boulders to gain the south ridge and route Hu.6, and then the summit plateau. On the summit plateau head west for 1km to the cabin. For further details see Fannaråken alternative routes.
