Calidris alpina, Dunlin, Myrsnipe. 18cm.

A common summer visitor which breeds on open moorland, especially beside water or marshland.

They are gregarious birds with several pairs nesting in close proximity. The nest is hidden in clumps and is lined with grass. They feed on terrestrial and aquatic insects and their larvae.

Distinguished from other waders by its dark upper rump and in summer by a black belly. The sexes are alike.
