Flora & FaunaBirds › Gyrfalcon

Falco rusticolus, Gyrfalcon, Jaktfalk. 60cm.

Gyrfalcon
A rare resident of the moorland zone.

Their nests are old raven or eagle nests on cliff ledges, or are scrapes on a ledge, preferably with a view of their hunting grounds.

Their prey is often willow grouse or ptarmigan, but they will also take small mammals. They hunt by flying low over the ground but will sometimes soar.

Their breeding success depends on the amount of prey for that year.
