An uncommon summer visitor to the mountain birch, willow scrub and moorland zones.
Nests in trees in old raven nests or on rocky ledges. They eat small birds, notably meadow pipits. They will also take, but are not dependent, on small rodents.
The male has a blue-grey back and crown while the female, which is the same size, has a brown crown and back. It is very fast.
