Carduelis flammea, Redpoll, Gråsisik. 13cm.

A common resident in the higher reaches of the valleys in the mountain birch and willow shrub zones. They are gregarious birds often seen in small mobile flocks. In winter they retreat to the lower deciduous woods, especially alder.

Their food is mixed but includes birch and alder seeds. Nests in trees and bushes, sometimes quite high up.

The male in summer has a wash of red on its chest.
