Gallinago gallinago, Snipe, Enkeltbekkasin. 25cm.
A quite common summer visitor which is seen in higher marshes. Snipe may be seen rising and diving around their territory in a display, but when flushed they zigzag away rapidly.
They nest in tussocks of grass in a well lined depression and lay 3-4 eggs. They eat insects and worms, if present, which they probe out of the ground with long beaks.
Gregarious outside the breeding season.
