Alopex lagopus, Arctic Fox, Fjellrev. 65cm.
In the early half of the last century they were rare in Scandinavia. Despite protection they are still threatened. This demise is due to increased competition from red foxes and climate warming.
The arctic fox is found in a few isolated pockets of open moorland, mostly much further north, but one pocket is nearby.
They survive off lemmings, voles, ptarmigan, and carrion. They live in extensive underground dens. Both sexes turn white in winter.
They live up to10 years.
