Downy Birch
A pioneer tree, the downy birch is found up to 750m, maybe higher.

It prefers damp locations, but will grow anywhere not too arid. It does not tolerate shade so may be crowded out by other spieces.

The hanging male and erect female catkins appear on the same tree in April. After wind fertilization the female catkins grow, ripen and droop. They release their tiny seeds in late summer.
