Scandinavian Mountains over 2000 metres - James Baxter

The north ridge is perhaps the best route of ascent and descent and it is possible to make use of the glacier/snowfield that descends down the east side of this ridge. This is the recommended route and the route described below. Another alternative to ascend is via the south west face which is a steep boulder field of 800 relentless metres. The south east ridge of Semeltinden is very steep, and will probably involve some difficult scrambling on loose rock.

The base of the north ridge is beside the middle of the 3 southern Urdadalstjörnin lakes, marked as lake 1594m on the map. This lake lies equidistant between Spiterstulen Lodge and Gjendebu Cabin. As the former is more accessible I have described the route as starting from here. However, as there are a few other Scandinavian mountains over 2000 metres in this area, namely Store Urdadalstinden and Store Heillstugutinden, it would also be sensible to camp in Urdadalen valley. Campsites in the valley are very limited from the north of the 2 northern lakes to the south of the 3 southern lakes.
