Lagopus mutus, Ptarmigan, Fjellrype. 36cm.

Ptarmigan
A common resident to the alpine zone above the tree line.

The nest is hidden in alpine vegetation and lined with grass and lichen. It eats shoots and berries of moorland and tundra plants.

In the winter it is white but in the summer mottled, but with a more grey specking than the willow grouse. Male and female differ in degrees of mottling. Like the willow grouse it is gregarious in winter time.
