Alces alces, Elk, Elg. 270cm.
Elk are unusual and rare residents in the wooded valleys which surround the mountains. Elk are much more common to the east of the main watershed in Norway.
They are generally found in the mature forests up to the tree line, and favour marshy areas.
Despite being up to 700kg they can subsist on shoots, twigs and bark of trees, supplemented in the summer with plants, leaves and aquatic plants. They are excellent swimmers. They do not have dens but rest in the forest.
They can live for up to 25 years.
