A small bush which largely occurs above the tree line on moorland up to 1200m, sometimes higher. It is also found by marshes lower down.
Reproduction similar to other birches with male and female catkins and then wind dispersal, but also some shoots from root sections.
Hosts many insects, and therefore birds, in the summer. The leaves turn rich colours in the autumn.
