Not nearly as widespread as the pine in the surrounding valleys and nearly always introduced or feral. They are found up to 500m and can live for 200 years.
The male yellow/purple flowers and female upright purple cones appear in May. These purple cones are fertilized and by October are mature, brown, 12cm cones.
The seeds in the cones are shed the following year and wind dispersed.
