Hu.17  Stølsmaradalen cabin to Skagastølsbu shelter
7 hours / 12km
1130m / 220m
Unmarked path, suitable only for experienced mountaineers.

Leave Stølsmaradalen cabin and head 2km north east climbing up to the pass by Snørestødet. From here the path continues north east, but descends for 1km. As the tree line approaches at the bottom of a steeper descent, the path forks, with one branch continuing the descent down to Vormeli Farm (Hu.16). Do not take this descending fork, but take the fork which makes a level traverse north west into the Midtmaradalen valley. Wade the stream to gain the north side of this perfectly formed Ushaped glacial valley.

Follow the north side of the stream for 7km passing up through wonderful meadows under huge impressive walls and peaks. The landscape here is truly exceptional. As the end of the valley approaches a steep headwall appears. The way up this headwall is difficult and a rope could be useful for added security. Initially head towards the summit of Store Skagastølstinden until you reach an altitude of 1400m. Then bear due west and scramble up a scree covered rake, often with a snowfield to traverse, to a small gap between the cliffs.

From the top of this gap there is a further 1km to ascend across scree, slabs and some snowfields to Skagastølsbu cabin. From here it is another three hours to Turtagrø hotel (see route Hu.8).
